GAIM 2023 Competition

Frequently Asked Questions

Registration

Who can register for the GAIM 2023 Competition? Any elementary school team in grades 3-5 or middle school team in grades 6-8 can register for the GAIM 2023 Competition with a designated coach. A team consists of 4 girls* in the same grade range. While GAIM is meant to support the classroom learning environment and community, the four girls on each team do not need to attend the same school.

* GAIM is a program especially designed for girls; however, we will not exclude any student who would like to participate.

How can we register for the competition? You can register your team with this form. Upon form submission, you will receive a confirmation email with information regarding the Coaches’ Corner and next steps. Registration is ongoing until April 1, 2023.

How many teams can each school register for the competition? Each school or individual may enroll as many teams as they would like across the two divisions. Our two divisions are Upper Elementary, for grades 3-5, and Middle, for grades 6-8.

How much does it cost to participate in the competition? The cost is $40 for each of the first 4 teams, and $30 for each team from the same school or group thereafter. For example, if you register 6 teams, the cost would be 4 x $40 + 2 x $30 = $220 total.

What is a ‘coach’ as listed on the GAIM 2023 Competition registration form?  The Coach is the adult point of contact for the teams in the registration. The Coach will receive communications and confirmations related to their registered teams' participation in GAIM. No knowledge of math is required, although it is a plus.

How many students can participate on each team? Up to four girls should participate on each team.

I am a parent. Can I put together a team?  We love parent coaches! Parents are encouraged to put together teams.

PARTICIPATION

Is the competition individual, or will my team be allowed to collaborate?  Collaboration is allowed and encouraged! GAIM is meant to be a team competition.

Will my team receive a score this year? Yes, coaches will receive scores for each of their teams shortly after the competition window.

How does the GAIM 2023 Competition work?

The GAIM 2023 competition consists of two rounds, to be worked on collaboratively by each team:

Round 1 is a set of 16 problems to be solved in an hour. The questions will be based on the lives of the GAIM 2023 women.

Round 2 will have a multi-part question centered around one fun math concept. This part will take 30 minutes.

There are 2 levels of competition: elementary and middle school.

  • Elementary: grades 3-5

  • Middle school: grades 6-8

A team must be made up of girls from the same grade-level range.

We are proud to partner with Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) to bring you the competition online. Participating teams will receive directions on how to get set up so you will be ready on GAIM day!  Every team will be provided with 4 AoPS accounts, 1 captain + 3 team members. Before the competition, you must log into these accounts and register at AoPS. At competition time, you will log back into your accounts and follow the directions there.

The competition window opens at midnight EDT on April 24th, 2023, and close at 11:59 PDT on April 30th, 2023. Each team must schedule time to log into the AoPS platform and complete both rounds of the competition in this window. We will accept submissions until 11:59PM, April 30th.

Coaches are responsible for proctoring their teams. The competition may be completed any time within the 7 day window.  Round 1 will take 1 hour and Round 2 will be 30 minutes with a 10-minute break in between, so plan for a 1.5+ hour slot of time.

Distinctions will be awarded by region. Teams achieving the highest scores in their region will be awarded national distinctions. We will feature all teams on our website, and will release solutions afterwards so you can see how these problems are solved and build your problem-solving muscles!

And that’s GAIM 2023 in a nutshell!
